I got the inspiration for this painting while reading the biography of a slave.  It struck me how frightening it would have been to try and escape to the North.  I like to think there was a special angel appointed to guide these fugitives to their goal. "Angel of the North Star" represents the keeper of the star that runaway slaves followed to freedom.
