“I see my role here as a teacher, and I happen to be a psychic medium. I think I’m here to remind people about their own abilities." - Laura Lynne Jackson

I set my sights on interviewing best selling author, Laura Lynne Jackson, after I read her books The Light Between Us and Signs. They confirmed to me that there is more to our time on Earth than meets the eye.

Laura is a renowned psychic and medium. She says her psychic gifts enable her to read the auric field (a term used to describe the subtle energy that surrounds and permeates all human beings). The different colors she sees around a client allow her to shed light on their past, present and future. The mediumship part of her gift is the highest form of being psychic. It enables her to connect with the consciousness of her client's departed loved ones and receive messages from them

As a child, Laura was already unconsciously leveraging her physic gifts. She thought everyone saw people’s auric fields. If she perceived someone with frazzled red energy, she knew they were not in a good place and to avoid them. Being in their presence felt like the screech of nails across a blackboard. On the other hand, being near someone with a blue aura felt lovely. At age eleven her psychic abilities were brought front and center when Laura had a premonition of her grandfather's death. It frightened her to the core. Her mother assured her that nothing was wrong with her. She wasn’t broken or flawed. She just has an extra ability, is all. That ability has been in their family for generations. Knowing that gave Laura permission to trust her inner knowings.

For those who roll their eyes at psychic mediums, being sought after by people like Chelsea Handler and Gwyneth Paltrow isn’t the only thing that gives Laura credibility. She has undergone stringent testing through the Forever Family Foundation, a nonprofit, science-based group that helps people in grief. She also has been studied by the Windbridge Institute for Applied Research in Human Potential in Arizona. At Windbridge, she passed an eight-step, quintuple-blind screening administered by scientists to become one of only a small group of certified research mediums. Due to the overwhelmingly enthusiastic response for private readings, Laura no longer allows new sign-ups on her waiting list. That’s because her current list is years long.

Like Laura, all the creatives I’ve included in this book are comfortable being guided by their intuition. None of them are afraid to follow their heart. In fact, they all honor their intuition over their intellect. Being psychic, I thought Laura Lynne could explain to me how to dial into my inner guidance. After all, trusting the light within brought her to where she is today. Anyone who has conversations with dead people and spent 20 years as a high school English teacher, ought to be able to give clear instructions on how to listen.

Laura holds faith that we all have, what she calls, a "Team of Light." “It’s made up of three parts. First there’s God energy, which is a source of love that connects us all. Next there’s the angelic realm which I refer to as ‘spirit guides.’ They are evolved beings who guide us. And then we have loved ones who have crossed over who also guide us. Our 'Team of Light' uses our psychic and intuitive abilities to communicate with us.”

The problem is at a young age most of us are trained by well-meaning people to doubt our intuition. The materialistic paradigm we live in teaches us to seek our answers on the outside. When we are between the ages five and seven, we learn to turn the volume all the way down on our heart connection. We are taught to follow the rules set in place by societal expectations, family systems, churches and schools. Fortunately, Laura has an easy way for the disconnected to reconnect.

“It starts with one simple step, which is intention. You get quiet within yourself and you talk to your 'Team of Light.' You don't even have to really know who they are. You just have to have that sense of being part of something greater than yourself, and say, ‘Okay, I'm all in, please help open me up.’ The more you surrender to it, the more you’ll be guided. We're trying to micromanage our lives, and all we really need to do is surrender to our 'Team of Light' and ask for guidance, and trust it. The trusting of it makes it stronger.”

Laura says there are four different ways that guidance shows up known as the four “clairs.”

“There's clairvoyance, which means clear seeing. When we sleep at night, our physical eyes are closed, and yet we’re vividly seeing in our dreams. That's our psychic or clairvoyant vision. For most people it comes through in the sleep state, and less in the waking state. That’s why when we are perplexed about something we say, ‘Let me sleep on it.'

The next one is clairaudience which means clear hearing. It’s when you hear a thought that's not yours. It could be the voice of a loved one who has crossed. It could be guidance you might hear from a spirit guide. But every now and then you'll notice that instead of a thought coming from you, a thought will come to you. A lot of people think clairaudience means you hear a physical booming voice outside of you. That's not what it is at all. It's like an inner thought voice that comes to you.

Then there is claircognizance. It means clear knowing. That’s when you have a download of an absolute knowing, and you can’t logically explain how you know it. Claircognizance can’t be forced. So if you have a question about what direction you should go in life you have to patiently wait for the answer. That’s what is meant by the phrase, ‘I'll know when I know.’

Clairsentience is the final clair. It means clear feeling. It's all about reading energy. It takes place right in your solar plexus area. We actually can feel energy there, which is why people talk about having a gut feeling about something. A lot of us have it without recognizing that we do. It’s basically understanding that energy is all around us, and that we have an ability to tune in and read it at all times. For example you might meet somebody for the first time, and they may present a certain way, but you have a feeling about them as well. That's because you're reading who they are on an energetic level, not how they present themselves physically.”

Following her 'Team of Light’s' guidance is what brought Laura to where she is today. She was teaching high school and doing readings on the side when she had a download that it was time for her to go public with her gifts. “My husband Garrett and I had a newborn baby, and I came out of the shower and I'm like, guess what? I need to be doing this in the world now. It's time. And, he was just like, ‘Okay,’ He knows how this works.”

That’s not to say Garrett wasn’t concerned. He was going to law school while working full time. He was worried that by owning herself as a psychic Laura could lose her teaching job, but the exact opposite happened. She quickly found that she had the support of the principal. So much so that she began doing readings for her.

A few years later Laura was on hall duty when she received a sudden download. She says, “It was like a seven hour conversation with my guides in a millisecond.” They told her she was going to write a book and become a speaker. Her book would go to TV and then be a movie.

Within a few hours of Laura getting the download, a friend reached out unexpectedly and connected her to people in the writing industry. From there, the other side took over to make it happen.

As my interview was winding down I had a nudge  to ask Laura if she could sense anyone around me? She explained that she is very strict about how many mediumistic readings she gives per week. They drain her energy so much that she can become quite ill. She had already done three readings that week so she wasn’t going to open that door, but she did let a little light in. “What I will tell you is that I had a sense of an older male on the other side coming through for you. Specifically on your mom's side of the family, a grandfatherly type. That's how it felt to me. With a name that repeats in the family.”

I immediately sensed that it was my Uncle Bill. He was named after his two grandfathers. I loved him dearly and knew he would make it his business to connect with me. I was fine with Laura not inviting him in further. I would never want her immune system compromised on my account. Besides, there’s no reason why I can’t open that door on my own.
